4 Ways To Remain Calm When Faced With Setback

It’s Time to Get Real

One of the best ways to remain calm is to reduce your expectations. You need to come to terms with understanding that things will not always go as you have planned it. No matter what goal you have set, or that important meeting with a prospective client which took a month to arrange, life has a way of its own. You can plan, which is a great trait, but remember, not everything can be in your control.

Acknowledge Your Emotions

So, your meeting just got canceled. You missed your flight. One of the investors for your start-up has pulled out. Whatever the situation, allow for whatever emotion you are feeling and that moment - to pour it out. Okay, if you are at the airport, silent rage, if you have to…but do it! Acknowledging your emotions is essential as it allows you to evaluate what you value in life and how important an event or circumstance is to you.

Acceptance

Accept what has happened. It is better to accept it than to overthink. Overthinking makes things worse and intensifies your emotions which in most cases can lead on to further issues of self-blame, blaming others and losing faith.

Moving On

This may be a hard thing to do, but with a clear head, you will be able to decide what happens next? Book the next flight, talk to the investor/look for another investor, call the client and clarify the reason for the meeting cancellation, etc. Sometimes, a listening ear can help too. Advice from an old friend or colleague can put things in perspective and open doors to new ways to deal with setbacks.
