If you have even been in a position where you have had to make a tough decision, you know how scared you would have been. You would have understood that every choice made results in consequence.

So, below, I list five ways to make fearless decisions where they are made rationally, without feeling guilty, without stress, and without affecting you mentally.

1. Take time out

Before you make any decision or have to announce a decision, consider a time out. Go for a walk, go to your favorite cafe, and order that exceptional coffee. Do something to break your regular pattern. This time out allows you to have some quality retrospection of why you are making this decision, how this decision is going to affect people around you, what happens if the outcome is not what you have expected and so on.

2. Sound it out

You are about to make a crucial decision which may have a significant impact on your relationship, your work life, or a colleague’s life. Where applicable, seek clarification, and get some feedback from people who have been through a similar situation. Remember, the decision will always be yours. What you are doing is seeking opinions and noting down points of contention, so that when and if they arise, you are better prepared with your answer/reasoning for making a certain decision.

3. The road may be long and windy, stick to it if you know it will work

You may have to decide where what people around you are expecting is a quick bandage solution. It would help if you held your ground and with your facts, explain why the decision you have made may take a longer approach before the result is seen, but the best one to follow through without shortcuts.

4. The road may be long and windy, and you may need to make several deviations

Following point 3, you have decided, but as you move along, you realize that you may need to make some detours. If this has been highlighted previously, there is no fear of a lack of faith in your decision-making skill.

5. Communicate with confidence

Get one thing clear. Your decisions are never going to please everyone. What is in your control is to be truthful, authentic, and transparent. In the end, regardless of what people make of your decision, you can be assured that it was well thought out, without any hidden agenda, and one where the decision is ultimately about improving something for the better.

Making fearless decisions can be daunting, but when you no longer fear what others think of your decision or fear your past bad decisions, only then can you step up and make new ones.
